Valar Atomics is seeking a Staff Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to design, develop, commission, and maintain control systems for advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities. This role spans the full controls stack—from PLC and DCS programming to SCADA/HMI development, safety instrumented systems, historian infrastructure, and enterprise integration—with senior technical leadership responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include:
• Develop and maintain PLC/DCS programs using platforms such as Rockwell ControlLogix, Siemens S7/TIA Portal, or Emerson; program in ladder logic, function block, structured text, and sequential function chart per IEC 61131-3.
• Design and configure SCADA applications on platforms like Ignition, FactoryTalk, or WinCC; build tag databases, communication drivers, scripting, and alarm configuration.
• Design HMI displays at local panel and supervisory SCADA levels in accordance with ISA-101 and High-Performance HMI principles.
• Develop batch control sequences per ISA-88; configure phase logic, unit procedures, and recipe management.
• Configure alarm systems to ISA-18.2 standards including setpoints, priorities, and suppression logic.
• Configure and commission safety instrumented functions (SIFs) on SIS platforms per IEC 61511.
• Configure plant historian systems (OSIsoft PI, Ignition Historian, or equivalent); build dashboards and support ISA-95 enterprise-control integration.
• Tune PID and advanced regulatory control loops; commission instrumentation including flow, pressure, temperature, and level devices.
• Own instrument engineering scope including sizing and specification of field devices, instrument index development, and hazardous area classification.
• Implement industrial communication protocols (OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus); configure interfaces between systems.
• Support OT network cybersecurity hardening per IEC 62443 or NIST SP 800-82.
• Prepare and execute control system FAT, SAT, and commissioning plans; maintain comprehensive engineering documentation.
• Diagnose and resolve control system faults; perform root cause analysis and document corrective actions.
• Provide technical direction to contractors and consultants; review and redline control system deliverables for compliance with project standards and nuclear quality requirements.
You will join Valar Atomics' I&C and Controls Engineering team within the Fuel Manufacturing group, working alongside process, electrical, and nuclear safety engineers in a hands-on environment where control system engineering directly supports production reliability and nuclear safety.
