Shield AI is seeking a Staff Engineer, Software Test to design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks and validation tooling for autonomy software systems. You will develop and execute comprehensive verification and validation strategies across multiple environments including simulation, SIL (Software-in-the-Loop), HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop), VIL (Vehicle-in-the-Loop), and representative hardware systems.
Key responsibilities include building automated regression, integration, functional, and performance test suites that enhance software quality and deployment confidence. You'll develop Python-based automation, test harnesses, and analysis tools to reduce manual testing effort and improve repeatability. The role involves analyzing test results, identifying software defects and integration issues, and supporting cross-functional root cause investigations across autonomy software, systems engineering, flight test, and integration teams.
You will develop software quality metrics, dashboards, and readiness assessments that provide objective evidence of software maturity. Integration of automated testing into CI/CD workflows is critical to enable continuous validation and rapid developer feedback. This is a technical leadership position focused on improving test infrastructure, automation coverage, and validation methodologies across the Expeditionary and Emerging Operations portfolio.
Required qualifications include a BS in Computer Science, Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or related field, with 4–7 years of experience developing software test, verification, automation, or validation solutions for robotics, autonomy, aerospace, or complex distributed systems. Strong proficiency in Python for automation, testing, and data analysis is essential. You must have experience developing automated test frameworks, test harnesses, or validation infrastructure, working in Linux-based development environments, and validating software across simulation and hardware environments. Experience with CI/CD pipelines, continuous validation practices, and software verification methodologies is required.
Preferred qualifications include experience with flight control systems (ArduPilot, PX4), unmanned aerial systems, autonomy/robotics/aerospace backgrounds, and familiarity with flight controllers and communications systems.
