Kraken, one of the world's longest-standing crypto platforms with over 10 million users, is seeking a Staff Engineer to own the technical direction of the Pro Verifications team. This team handles KYC/KYB verification for business customers signing up on Kraken Pro, ensuring compliance with sanctions and watchlists while maintaining fast onboarding.
In this hands-on technical leadership role, you will set the architecture and patterns for verification services across the KYC/KYB flow. You'll decide how the team abstracts third-party KYC/KYB vendors to prevent outages, design fail-closed behavior and audit trails that satisfy regulatory requirements, and identify recurring failure classes to eliminate them systematically. You'll write architecture decision records (ADRs), mentor senior engineers through design reviews and code feedback, and hold the line on security and compliance at design time rather than as a late gate.
You'll be measured on whether verification gets faster, more decisions are automated, accuracy improves, systems remain reliable, and the team grows stronger. The team deploys constantly behind feature flags in small, reversible pieces. Security and compliance are integrated at design time, and every story ties to a metric it's meant to move.
You bring around eight years building and running production systems with a track record of owning technical direction in a domain. You have deep expertise in Rust with versatility in TypeScript and React. You've set architecture that others build on and can point to specific failure classes you designed out. You've made teams faster through patterns, tooling, or mentoring. You've built in high-consequence domains like compliance, payments, or security where mistakes carry real costs. You're strong in distributed systems, service contracts, and secure design—you've integrated untrusted third-party APIs with proper timeouts, retries, idempotency, circuit breakers, and tested backup paths. You're comfortable with or can quickly ramp on gRPC, Temporal, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, MySQL/MariaDB, Redis, and GitLab CI.
Nice-to-haves include direct KYC, KYB, or fraud experience; familiarity with providers like Trulioo, Persona, or ComplyAdvantage; comfort building with AI in the loop; and time in crypto, fintech, or other regulated spaces.
