Proxima Fusion, Europe's fastest-growing and best-funded fusion company, is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support the industrialisation of magnet production processes. As a spin-out from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Proxima is developing next-generation stellarator fusion power plants (Alpha and Stellaris) backed by over €650M in funding, with teams across Munich, Zurich, and Oxford. In this role, you will play a central role in designing, testing, and scaling up production processes for high-temperature superconducting magnets—critical components for commercial fusion energy. You will bridge manufacturing technology from first prototypes to full-scale production, operating across design, engineering, and hands-on production work. Key responsibilities include: - Define requirements for industrialised manufacturing equipment and processes to ensure performance, repeatability, and safe operation - Contribute to development of in-process monitoring and non-destructive testing (NDT) systems - Determine and justify quality requirements that balance manufacturing efficiency with product performance - Design jigs, tools, and fixtures for magnet production - Collaborate closely with engineers and technicians across multiple teams to troubleshoot production issues and optimise processes - Work across a wide range of production processes including welding, bonding, sealing, coating, machining, and assembly This is a highly technical role at the intersection of advanced materials, precision manufacturing, and energy technology. You will contribute directly to executing key activities within Proxima's magnet program and help realise the world's first commercial stellarator fusion power plant. REQUIREMENTS: - Master's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or similar engineering field - Extensive experience in manufacturing process development, process monitoring, and non-destructive testing in industrial settings - Strong hands-on experience in production environments across a wide range of processes (welding, machining, assembly, bonding) - Hands-on experience in prototyping and testing - Proficiency in creating development plans from start to finish for new processes - Experience troubleshooting issues on production lines - Ability to work across a variety of tasks in a dynamic environment - Reliable, proactive, and solution-oriented mindset - Strong team collaboration skills with engineers and technical staff NICE TO HAVE: - Familiarity with both prototype and industrial manufacturing - CAD proficiency (Catia V5 or 3DExperience preferred) - Background in product testing and qualification in regulated industries - Exposure to SCADA systems or MES integration - Knowledge of safety standards and risk assessments in automated environments
