Shield AI is seeking a Staff Engineer, Autonomy to join its Melbourne office. In this role, you will work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, task and motion planning, and controls to advance autonomous systems for uncrewed aircraft.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing autonomous behaviors for uncrewed aircraft, working with real sensor data to build robust sensor fusion solutions, and developing autonomy systems in high-fidelity software and hardware-in-the-loop simulations. You will integrate Shield AI autonomy products with third-party aircraft and systems, collaborate across AI, robotics, and systems engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions, and contribute to architecture, code quality, design reviews, and best practices. As a Staff-level engineer, you will lead and mentor junior engineers, helping to elevate team capabilities and establish technical standards.
Required qualifications include a tertiary-level qualification in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, Aerospace, Robotics, or a related field, significant professional experience in robotics, autonomy, perception, or aerospace systems, strong experience in modern C++, and demonstrated ability in building and delivering reliable software systems in fast-paced environments.
Preferred qualifications include prior experience with uncrewed systems (especially air domain), defense industry background, and significant expertise in state estimation, real-time systems, guidance/navigation/control, or path planning. This is an excellent opportunity to work on mission-critical autonomous systems at a venture-backed defense-tech company with global operations.
