Campfire builds modern ERP software for finance teams, consolidating accounting, close, and reporting workflows into a single, intuitive system. The company is a small, senior team focused on craft, speed, and making complex financial software feel simple.
You will join as a Staff Design Engineer, a senior individual-contributor role responsible for shaping the core experience of Campfire's ERP platform. You'll tackle the company's thorniest, highest-leverage design problems—those that span multiple teams, touch complex workflows, and require deep systems thinking. Rather than owning a single feature area, you'll have significant ownership over ambiguous, cross-cutting problems such as reimagining the general ledger experience or designing coherent data-flow systems between modules.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning end-to-end design for complex, ambiguous problem spaces spanning multiple product areas, from problem framing through shipping and post-launch iteration
- Partnering with product and engineering leads as a peer, shaping roadmap and strategy rather than executing against a spec
- Designing for dense, data-heavy workflows (tables, ledgers, reconciliation, reporting) while maintaining clarity and speed
- Strengthening and evolving Campfire's design system and interaction patterns to ensure coherence as the product grows
- Mentoring other designers, providing sharp critique, and raising the craft bar across the team
- Engaging directly with customers—finance and accounting teams—to ground design decisions in real workflows
- Driving design reviews and enabling faster, better-informed team decisions
The role is in-office in San Francisco at headquarters, five days per week. Remote work is not available.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of product design experience with a track record of owning complex, high-impact product areas end to end
- Experience designing for data-dense, workflow-heavy software (fintech, ERP, dev tools, B2B SaaS, or similar) strongly preferred
- Strong systems thinking: ability to zoom out to see how a feature fits the broader product and zoom in on pixel-level details
- Portfolio demonstrating range: 0-to-1 work and rigorous iteration on existing systems
- Excellent communication skills to build alignment with engineers, PMs, and executives, and explain design rationale clearly
- Comfort working in ambiguity with incomplete requirements and evolving scope
- Prior experience at an early- or growth-stage startup with a bias toward shipping over perfecting in isolation
- Ability to code prototypes using HTML/CSS and sufficient JavaScript to build interactive, functional mockups
