Katana is an AI-first SaaS company building inventory and manufacturing software for 1,500+ businesses globally. The company is expanding from small merchants into larger, multi-channel, multi-location operations and is in an exciting growth phase.
You will join the Platform & Intelligence team as a Senior Product Designer, reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer. You'll work in a pair with another senior designer, splitting responsibility for the AI product domain and collaborating on the hardest design problems.
This is frontier work. Katana is building towards a conversational AI experience where customers can ask questions in plain English ("Did I actually make money on this product?") and get trustworthy, sourced answers from their operational data, then act on those answers by creating purchase orders and manufacturing orders in a live system. The company is also embedding Katana into AI tools customers already use (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini) through Model Context Protocol connectors.
Key responsibilities:
- Own the design of the in-product Katana AI experience end-to-end, from prototype through beta to production
- Design the trust layer: sourced answers, confirm-before-write safeguards, permissions, audit trails, and undo functionality
- Design for moments when the AI assistant not only reports a number but explains why it's wrong and offers to fix it
- Shape how proactive insights reach customers (stockouts, late suppliers, margin slips) without creating noise
- Design how Katana appears inside other AI tools through MCP connectors
- Run customer research and set KPIs to validate whether the design work moved business metrics
- Prototype with AI against the Katana design system on real customer data, getting working prototypes in front of customers by Friday if sketched Monday
- Take features from viable to lovable by revisiting shipped work and improving engagement and satisfaction
- Contribute to design system evolution—currently unowned, it's a high-leverage artifact that AI builds against
- Occasionally support the Advantage team (custom solutions for high-value SMB customers) on short-timeline design work
Design at Katana is built, not drawn. You'll prototype with AI tools against the design system, getting feedback on working prototypes running on real customer data rather than mockups. Designers have direct access to product and customer data and can take work from prototype straight to production pull requests. The goal is to make that the default rather than the exception.
Success milestones:
- 30 days: Deep knowledge of product, customers, and current AI work; first working prototype built and tested with a real customer; clear split of ground with design partner
- 6 months: Shipped AI work used by real customers; running the full loop (research → design → build → ship → measure); at least one piece taken to production yourself
- 12 months: Visibly improved AI design; established patterns for trust, confirmation, and explanation; design-to-production becoming the default; your research and KPI-setting approach adopted by the team
The role is hybrid from the Tallinn office: Tuesday–Thursday in-office, Monday and Friday flexible. The company supports relocation from within Europe for the right candidate.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years as a product designer on B2B SaaS products, with a track record of what you owned, shipped, and the outcomes
- Desire to build the thing, not hand it over—whether through AI tools, front-end code, or refusing to accept handoffs; you own the built result
- Run user research yourself (interviews, behavioral tracking, documented insight) and analyze it properly using multiple methods; can point to decisions that changed because of your research
- Strong UX and UI craft; understand the difference and excel at both; can diagnose what's wrong with nearly-right designs and explain the user cost
- Know when to work inside a design system and when a problem needs a blank canvas; care about consistency and know how to move a product toward it
- Comfortable designing where no established pattern exists; find that energizing
- Ship a v1 good enough to learn from, then make it better; have taken existing products further and set your own KPIs
- Carry a business mindset; can articulate both the customer problem and the business problem you're solving
NICE TO HAVE:
- Designed an AI or conversational product surface with opinions on what works
- Built with AI coding tools or shipped your own front-end code
- Owned or meaningfully shaped a design system
- Used Jobs To Be Done framework on real work
- Formal visual or graphic design education
- Knowledge of operational domains: inventory, supply chain, manufacturing, or ecommerce
MINDSET:
- Owner, not order-taker; take responsibility for your domain, know the roadmap, contribute to planning
- Independent and collaborative; can work alone but know great products aren't built that way; designing in a pair should appeal to you
- Share early and often—rough work with designers, PMs, engineers, and customer-facing teams, not a reveal at the end
- Flexible about method; know many ways to get to a result and accept that the right one depends on circumstances
- AI-first for real; AI has already changed what designers do here daily, and working out what it changes next is part of the job
- Growth mindset; experiment with methods that might not work, present failures to the team so others learn
- Genuinely interested in how customers run their businesses; willing to learn a deep operational product properly; Katana's complexity should appeal to you
