Salary: USD 279,000 - 310,000 / annual

Discord is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead technical vision and strategy for analytical data infrastructure. This is a high-impact individual contributor role reporting to the Director of Data Engineering, responsible for designing and maintaining enterprise-scale curated datasets and data models that power internal decisions, investor communications, and public metrics. Key responsibilities include defining technical strategy and architectural direction for analytics infrastructure; owning end-to-end data governance program design and implementation in partnership with stakeholders and Data Platform Engineering; designing sophisticated data abstractions and analytical frameworks using SQL, Python, and modern data stack technologies; developing data quality frameworks, monitoring, anomaly detection, and alerting at massive scale with appropriate rigor for externally reported numbers; driving adoption of consistent data modeling patterns, naming conventions, documentation standards, and metric governance across the data organization; leading cross-functional technical initiatives and mentoring engineers; and navigating ambiguity to balance short-term delivery with long-term infrastructure investment. Required qualifications: 7+ years in data and software engineering with focus on building curated, consumer-facing datasets; 7+ years designing, developing, and maintaining data infrastructure at scale; expert-level SQL and strong Python skills with solid CI/CD fundamentals; proven experience implementing data quality audits, monitoring systems, and automated remediation for massive datasets; strong business acumen and communication skills to translate ambiguous business questions into metric definitions and explain complex implementations to technical and executive audiences; track record of hands-on collaboration with Data Science, Finance, and Product teams. Bonus qualifications include passion for Discord or online communities, experience building or contributing to semantic layers or metrics stores, experience with modern analytics tools (dbt, BigQuery), experience defining and governing metric standards across data organizations, and experience with reporting infrastructure subject to external audit or SOX compliance.
