Prefect, a leader in workflow orchestration and automation infrastructure, is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to own and operate its internal data platform following the 2026 merger with Dagster. You will take over the existing platform, land the consolidated data stack (Snowflake warehouse + Dagster orchestrator) at cutover, and own it end-to-end thereafter. Key responsibilities include: architecting and managing Snowflake (sizing, cost optimization, access controls, security); owning dbt transformations and Dagster orchestration standards; managing ingestion tooling (Fivetran, Sling, dlt, AWS DMS) and reverse ETL (Hightouch, Census); designing systems to reduce cross-team dependencies and homegrown ingestion debt; establishing platform reliability through alerting, data quality, and cost monitoring; and tackling the deferred data backlog (one-off ingestion, enablement, growth analytics). You'll partner with engineering on SLA-carrying pipelines (billing, consumption pricing) while they retain ownership, and live in Dagster daily to feed learnings back to the product team. You'll work independently with stakeholders across organizations to define requirements, set roadmap priorities, and drive execution. Part of the platform is open-source (dagster-open-platform), making your work a public reference implementation of Prefect's own product. You'll report to Jenny, Head of Engineering. Required qualifications: Staff-level data platform experience with proven ability to set architecture across organizations and navigate stakeholder complexity independently; deep production experience with dbt and modern cloud warehouses; hands-on experience with modern orchestrators (Dagster experience a plus); managed ingestion and reverse ETL tooling expertise; self-directed approach to translating ambiguous business asks into scoped, prioritized work; comfort working in the open on public codebases.
