Form Energy is hiring a Staff Data Engineer to design, build, and operate the data systems powering their deployed iron-air battery energy storage projects. You'll transform real-time field telemetry into reliable, trustworthy datasets that the entire company depends on. As a hands-on senior individual contributor and technical lead, you'll own the operational-telemetry data products, independently lead the design of novel data solutions, and raise the bar for data reliability and engineering practice across the organization. Your work will span commercial project operations initially, with expansion into manufacturing and R&D data over time. Key responsibilities include: - Design and operate streaming and batch pipelines that ingest, transform, and serve real-time telemetry data using open table formats (Iceberg/Delta Lake) - Lead the design of novel data solutions with technical design docs and RFCs, driving alignment across data, applications, and field stakeholders - Model and serve time-series and event data for downstream analytics, monitoring, and applications - Build and maintain data orchestration (Dagster, Prefect, or Airflow) with reliability, observability, and testability - Manage AWS infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code (Pulumi/Terraform) for your pipelines - Partner with field operations, hardware/controls engineers, and analytics teams to translate operational needs into trustworthy data products - Participate in on-call rotation for ops-critical data systems - Mentor team members and raise engineering standards through code review and technical influence You'll bring 7+ years of data or software engineering experience with a strong track record building and operating production data pipelines where reliability is operationally critical. Required skills include production programming (Python, Scala, Java, or Go), Apache Spark, dbt, open table formats, streaming systems (Kafka/Kinesis), orchestration frameworks, and AWS with infrastructure-as-code. Nice-to-have experience includes Databricks/Snowflake, industrial IoT, time-series databases, and energy/hardware domain background. Form Energy is a rapidly scaling American manufacturing and energy technology company revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day iron-air battery systems. The company has been recognized by TIME, MIT Technology Review, and Fast Company, and is currently ramping production at its first high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia.
