ZeitMind is an autonomous data engineer platform for mid-market businesses, enabling agents and people to work together on company data—ingesting, pipelining, cleaning, analyzing, and building operational apps. The company is experiencing rapid growth, onboarding multiple enterprise customers weekly, and the backend infrastructure is the critical bottleneck to scaling further.
As Staff Backend Engineer for Platform, you will own the core infrastructure powering this growth. Your responsibilities include:
- Scaling a multi-tenant PostgreSQL database under unpredictable, compounding load: query optimization, I/O tuning, read/write separation, and horizontal scaling strategies
- Making agent-driven workloads survivable: handling scenarios where a single user spins up 30 concurrent table syncs (some running for hours) while others query large data sources
- Managing the sandbox layer: Docker containers where agents execute queries and reverse-engineer files, with strict compute and memory budgets
- Owning connectivity into customer networks: implementing SOCKS5 over WebSockets, authentication, and routing
- Scoping and building the architecture end-to-end
You will work in a startup environment where ownership, pragmatism, and hands-on execution are valued over perfect specifications. The tech stack is TypeScript end-to-end (Bun, tRPC, Postgres, Supabase, React frontend with Mantine and TanStack Query), plus Docker, job/process management, VPN/routing, and agentic frameworks.
The role is based in Munich with an on-site, in-person culture. The company supports relocation within Europe. If you're already in London, they can accommodate regular Munich travel as they open a small London office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Staff or Principal level, still hands-on and writing production code
- Proven experience building and scaling multi-tenant data platforms in B2B startups or platform companies
- Deep PostgreSQL or database expertise: query plans, locking, I/O, caching, replication, sharding
- Comfort with startup pace and ownership without detailed specifications
- Pragmatic mindset: build foundations right without overengineering
- Strong TypeScript proficiency
- English C1 level; German is a plus
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience at data platform or warehouse companies (Snowflake, Databricks, Cloudflare, or similar)
- Networking depth: proxies, VPN, routing
