Garner Health is transforming the U.S. healthcare system by partnering with employers to redesign healthcare delivery. The company applies 550+ proprietary clinical metrics across 80+ specialties to a dataset of 320M+ patients to identify top-performing doctors and steer members toward higher-quality, lower-cost care. In five years, Garner has helped 2.5 million people access better care and saved $1B in healthcare costs.
As a Staff Applied Scientist, you will own production algorithmic systems end-to-end—from problem framing and objective definition through shipping and real-world validation. This is a player-coach role combining hands-on technical work with leadership of a small team. You will split time between your own technical contributions and mentoring team members on their approach to complex problems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning high-stakes, ambiguous problems and setting how the team frames and approaches them
- Translating messy healthcare and business constraints into clear objectives and decision frameworks
- Defining metrics to judge solution success and validating before shipping
- Selecting the right technical approach (ML, optimization, heuristics, expert systems, or hybrids) based on problem requirements
- Delivering algorithmic breakthroughs on the company's most important metrics
- Leading a small team, setting technical direction, unblocking obstacles, and supporting their growth
- Reviewing applied science work across the company to ensure methodological soundness
- Building deep understanding of the healthcare economy and Garner's role within it
Near-term roadmap problems include: provider tiering optimization (jointly optimizing geographic access and total-cost-of-care savings), AI primary care doctor (fine-tuning and productionizing an LLM-based primary care experience with safety guardrails), and member engagement modeling (building ML systems to optimize channel and timing for member touchpoints).
The role is based in Garner's New York City office (Financial District) with a requirement to work in-office three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).
