Carbon is seeking a Staff Application Engineer to lead complex, cross-functional programs in advanced manufacturing and 3D printing technology. This role sits at the intersection of product development, customer success, and technical strategy, owning the full lifecycle of application development from concept through production readiness. You will educate and influence customers on design best practices for Carbon's DLS (Digital Light Synthesis) technology, guiding them through design tradeoffs, manufacturability considerations, and production requirements. You'll lead development and optimization of applications across design, file preparation, printing, post-processing, and quality validation, owning technical outcomes, timelines, and risk mitigation. Your responsibilities include driving technical strategy for assigned applications, evaluating projects for production viability based on product-market fit and cost models, and serving as the technical bridge between go-to-market teams and internal software, product, materials, and hardware teams. You will use hypothesis-driven approaches to define test methods and iterate on solutions, contribute insights across multiple industry verticals, and produce documentation and reusable workflows that improve team efficiency. Mentoring other Application Engineers and identifying process improvements are key aspects of the role. The position requires 8+ years of product development or design experience with a demonstrated track record of shipping products from concept to production. You must have strong CAD/CAE proficiency (SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, Magics, Rhino), experience with Carbon's Design Engine or similar lattice design software, and scripting/computational design skills (Python, Grasshopper). Knowledge of FEA, structural analysis, plastic material properties, traditional manufacturing techniques (injection molding, urethane casting, CNC), and cost modeling is essential. A BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline is required. Based in Sunnyvale, CA with a minimum 3 days/week onsite requirement (Tues-Thurs). Occasional domestic and international travel (~10%) to customer locations.
