OpenGov is seeking a Senior Product Engineer to drive growth and expansion of OG Assist, their flagship AI assistant platform built specifically for local and state governments. This is a hands-on technical role combining product ownership with direct engineering contribution. You will own outcomes end-to-end: from customer discovery and iteration, through architecture and implementation, to shipping production code. You operate in a fast-paced, AI-native environment and lead by example through both product thinking and code quality.
In this role, AI-native tooling augments your work across discovery, design, research synthesis, implementation, and testing. You redirect the time saved toward higher-leverage activities: building with customers, interpreting research, owning architecture and production quality, and making strategic product decisions. AI handles spec drafting, mockup generation, interview synthesis, boilerplate scaffolding, release content, automated code review, and test case generation. Your job is to understand customers, make calls on what matters, own outcomes, write production-grade code, and build cross-functional trust.
Key responsibilities include: refining and communicating the product vision for OG Assist grounded in customer research and business goals; conducting and synthesizing customer discovery to inform build/cut decisions; owning the product roadmap with ruthless prioritization; designing and building features end-to-end as a primary codebase contributor; defining UX flows and interaction patterns within the design system; writing clear intent documents for AI tooling and reviewing generated specs and code; setting technical direction (build-vs-buy, tradeoffs, ambiguity resolution); tracking adoption, usage, and business metrics to drive iteration; representing the product in customer conversations, QBRs, and cross-functional reviews; and identifying gaps in AI harnesses, design systems, and platform capabilities.
OpenGov is the leader in AI and ERP solutions for local and state governments. More than 2,000 cities, counties, state agencies, school districts, and special districts rely on the OpenGov Public Service Platform. The company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dubuque, Dallas, and Pune, and employs 800+ people.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 6 to 9 years of experience spanning product ownership and hands-on software engineering, with a track record of shipping production code in a SaaS environment
- Strong engineering fundamentals: comfortable owning a feature from design through implementation, testing, and deployment
- Proficiency in modern web technologies (TypeScript, React) and comfort picking up the specific stack used by OG Assist
- Experience building with or on top of LLMs or AI agents in production (strong plus)
- Demonstrated ability to own projects end-to-end, provide technical direction to peers, and keep stakeholders informed
- Strategic mindset: analyzes competitive landscape, market trends, and customer behavior to inform roadmap and architecture decisions
- Excellent written and verbal communication; documents decisions clearly and influences others through structured reasoning
- Comfortable defining UX flows and working within a design system, with the technical range to implement what you design
- Fluent in AI-native workflows for both product and engineering work; can identify gaps in AI tooling and articulate platform investment needs
- Experience representing products in customer-facing forums (QBRs, discovery sessions, executive reviews)
