Apple Services Engineering (ASE) is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead a Site Reliability Engineering team responsible for building and operating massive cloud infrastructure clusters that power Apple's services including iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Intelligence, and Maps. The role focuses on the Compute team, which manages virtualization and containerization platforms at global scale.
As an SRE manager, you will lead a high-performing team responsible for providing the platform for mission-critical cloud systems. Your responsibilities include maintaining constant uptime, enabling seamless scaling, and supporting new applications and services. You will work with world-class engineers on core virtualization and containerization technologies, customize solutions for Apple's diverse needs, and engage with upstream communities to drive Apple's infrastructure requirements.
Key responsibilities include building and growing a team of engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence, managing enterprise services in large-scale Unix environments, and operating multi-tenant infrastructure as a managed service. You will demonstrate strong technical leadership in cloud computing, with hands-on experience across public and/or private cloud environments.
Required qualifications include extensive leadership experience building high-performing engineering teams with deep focus on cloud computing, proven ability to manage enterprise services in large-scale Unix environments, strong team development and mentoring philosophy, and excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication skills with solid technical background in engineering or computer science.
Preferred qualifications include experience with automation and removing operational load via software, design and deployment of VM and container infrastructure using platforms such as KVM, QEMU, AWS, or Google Cloud, experience with OpenStack or CloudStack, Puppet or Chef, and Kubernetes experience.
