Kong is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join the Managed Gateways team, a key growth initiative already achieving double-digit year-over-year adoption. This role focuses on building distributed systems and multi-cloud networking infrastructure that powers Kong's Dedicated Cloud Gateways and Serverless Gateways products.
In this position, you will design, develop, and operate highly available distributed systems ensuring resilience to regional and zonal outages. You'll own and lead delivery of key features end-to-end, from design through implementation and production rollout. Your responsibilities include building microservices and control-plane components, partnering with Product and Engineering teams to deliver features at scale, and participating in on-call rotations to drive reliability improvements.
You'll also write automated tests and observability hooks to ensure reliability, assist in hiring and mentoring engineers on the team, and contribute to shaping the technical roadmap for Managed Gateways. This is a high-velocity, pre-IPO environment where you'll balance innovation with reliability and direct customer impact.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
- 5+ years of experience building high-performance software, ideally in infrastructure or platform engineering
- Strong experience with Golang
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, networking (L4/L7, DNS, TLS/SSL, HTTP), and cloud-native architectures
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes)
- Experience building APIs, standardizing APIs in large organizations, and creating API workflows
- Experience designing and operating systems to deliver 99.99%+ uptime SLAs
- Proven ability to debug complex systems from bit-and-bytes level (packets, protocols) to high-level design
- Knowledge of observability and monitoring practices for high availability and performance
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across teams and geographies
- Strong sense of ownership with experience driving features end-to-end and influencing technical direction

- Background in API management, API workflows, or developer platforms
