Zoox is seeking a Senior Trim & Lighting Engineer to serve as the engineering point of contact for a vehicle program, coordinating across body teams, suppliers, and internal engineering groups. You will own the design and release of attachment and mounting interfaces for interior, exterior, seating, and lighting components, driving multiple suppliers in parallel across trim, lighting, seating, and exterior commodities while holding each to design, cost, and timeline commitments.
Key responsibilities include maximizing carryover of components and part numbers to minimize new part creation, developing attachment solutions that require minimal tooling changes, and managing interfaces with the body/structures team to translate structural changes into trim, seating, and lighting attachment requirements. You will partner with the Validation team to define and execute component and subsystem validation plans (DVP&Rs), work across engineering teams to release parts and assemblies in 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX), and apply sound cost judgment in design decisions including VA/VE and should-cost awareness to protect program cost targets.
You will lead a small team of engineers as needed, defining tasks and providing technical supervision, and lead smaller projects spanning multiple teams. Technical responsibilities include owning design and release using CATIA V6, translating system and interface requirements into manufacturable designs, creating and maintaining technical documentation including DFMEAs and DVP&Rs, and reviewing CAE simulation results to optimize attachment performance, fit, and durability. You will present technical direction, anticipate objections, and build consensus on interface and integration decisions.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of relevant experience (or Master's with 7+, or PhD with 3+), deep knowledge of automotive interior/exterior trim, seating, or lighting engineering, and proven experience taking automotive components through at least one full design-to-launch cycle at OEM or Tier 1 level. You must have demonstrated experience with carryover strategy and attachment/interface design, strong command of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis, and proficiency in CATIA V6 (or V5/equivalent). Experience managing interfaces with body/structures teams, releasing parts in PLM environments (3DEXPERIENCE preferred), managing multiple technical suppliers under tight constraints, and familiarity with validation processes across a complete vehicle lifecycle program are essential. You should be comfortable operating in an early-phase, ambiguous, fast-moving program environment and able to work independently on substantial problems while leading small teams.
