Rocket Lab Optical Systems, part of Rocket Lab's Space Systems division, is seeking a Senior Technical Program Manager II to lead electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) space missions and ground-based sensor networks. This role manages multiple government contracts for the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community, overseeing cost, schedule, staffing, and technical performance of complex space and ground systems.
You will manage programs encompassing electronics, software, and EO/IR sensors, identifying and mitigating risks while developing contingency and recovery plans. Key responsibilities include leading teams of engineers through planning and execution of test events, resolving technical and operational issues, and maintaining clear communication with internal stakeholders, functional teams, executive leadership, and customers. You will develop and track Integrated Master Schedules (IMS), manage Earned Value Management (EVM) metrics, lead technical interchange meetings, mentor junior staff, and support proposal and Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) efforts.
The ideal candidate brings 8+ years of experience managing technical projects for the US Government, with hands-on expertise in active optical systems and space EO payloads. Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in business, technology, or technical discipline; proven ability to lead teams to project completion; experience with test plan development, astronomy, physics, electronics, software, and/or remote sensing; an active Secret clearance with TS/SCI eligibility; and US citizenship. A current SSBI clearance is a plus. You should be self-motivated, capable of working with minimal oversight, and possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset.
