Join Palo Alto Networks' Advanced URL Filtering (Internet Security) Infrastructure and Platform Team as a Senior Staff Software Engineer. You will design, build, and maintain threat research systems for both customer-facing products and internal infrastructure, working at the intersection of big data, distributed systems, and machine learning to detect and defend against emerging web security threats.
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with data scientists, security researchers, product managers, and SREs to transform research ideas into next-generation security products. You'll be responsible for implementing large-scale systems that analyze and categorize enormous volumes of URLs using machine learning and deep learning models, while ensuring production reliability through rigorous testing and monitoring.
Key responsibilities include: designing and implementing backend services and data pipelines on distributed systems; collecting product requirements and creating design specifications with stakeholders; adhering to software development best practices; managing production releases and deployments; and mentoring junior engineers on the team.
You should have a BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience, with 3+ years of backend engineering in industry. Strong proficiency in Go or Java (with Python fluency) is essential. You'll need hands-on experience designing, building, and operating distributed backend systems, including regression and integration testing. Practical experience with major cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure), Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and Linux system administration is required. Database experience (MongoDB, MySQL) including schema design and query optimization is critical. Big data/ETL experience with Spark or similar frameworks is a plus, as is familiarity with machine learning concepts, web content classification, and web technologies (JavaScript/TypeScript). Experience with AI coding tools and agent-based workflows is valued.
Palo Alto Networks emphasizes in-office collaboration, with most teams working full-time from the office with flexibility as needed. The company is mission-driven around cybersecurity innovation, with a culture centered on disruption, collaboration, execution, integrity, and inclusion.
