Rippling is a unified platform for HR, IT, and Finance, enabling businesses to manage the entire employee lifecycle in a single system. The company has raised $1.85B+ from top-tier investors including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund, and Sequoia, and is headquartered in San Francisco.
The HRIS (Human Resources Information Systems) Product Team is at the heart of Rippling's ecosystem, managing all aspects of employee data including hiring, onboarding, offboarding, and transitions. Employee Records serves as a foundational element powering 20+ products and integrating seamlessly across the platform. The team operates at the forefront of Rippling's growth, building new products at high velocity to support expansion into new verticals and customer segments while maintaining data integrity.
The HRIS team is organized into four product verticals: HRIS Flows Experience (creating intuitive workflows for employee data management), HRIS Flows Infrastructure (providing the scalable backbone for flow products), HR Applications (developing tools for viewing and managing employee data), and Org Management (enabling creation and maintenance of company structures).
You will architect and lead the design, development, and maintenance of internet-scale, highly distributed systems and scalable services. Responsibilities include actively participating in hands-on coding using Python, Golang, and Java; providing visionary technical leadership and setting the direction for engineering best practices; mentoring engineers across the organization; architecting systems capable of handling millions of simultaneous users; designing and implementing clean, modularized APIs including Backend for Frontend (BFF) systems; designing analytical and transactional storage solutions at petabyte scale (Presto, S3, Snowflake, MySQL, Aurora, MongoDB); developing systems with four or five 9s uptime (99.99%–99.999%); and implementing comprehensive observability practices including monitoring, logging, and tracing.
You will influence engineering direction without relying on direct reporting authority, balance hands-on coding with architecture and mentorship, lead complex architectural initiatives and large-scale migrations across multiple teams, and communicate effectively through design documents, RFCs, and architecture reviews.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Extensive experience building internet-scale distributed systems and developing scalable services
- Deep expertise in both analytical and transactional systems
- Strong understanding of scalability, concurrency, SLAs, system resiliency, and observability
- Proficiency in Python, Golang, and Java
- Experience handling systems with millions of users
- Strong fundamentals in backend architecture: API design, data modeling, service boundaries, dependency management, concurrency, performance, reliability, and failure isolation
- Proven experience building internal platforms or foundational systems used by multiple engineering teams
- Experience designing guardrails, validation systems, and automated enforcement mechanisms
- Strong operational ownership including observability, debugging, incident response, capacity planning, and production reliability
- Experience leading complex architectural initiatives and large-scale migrations across multiple teams
- Ability to influence engineering direction without direct reporting authority
- Comfortable balancing hands-on coding with architecture, mentorship, and organizational leadership
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly through design documents, RFCs, and architecture reviews
BONUS:
- Experience building configuration-driven platforms, workflow engines, orchestration systems, developer platforms, or low-code frameworks
- Experience owning foundational platform systems adopted by hundreds of engineers or multiple product organizations
- Background in safely migrating thousands of existing configurations, workflows, or application instances onto new platforms
- Experience establishing performance budgets, reliability guardrails, platform governance, and automated architectural enforcement
- Practical experience using AI-assisted developer tooling to accelerate migrations, automate refactoring, validate invariants, or review large-scale system changes
- Familiarity with web or mobile application architecture and backend infrastructure for complex user-facing platforms
