Shield AI, a venture-backed defense-tech company founded in 2015, is seeking a Senior Staff Data Engineer to build and operate the enterprise lakehouse on Databricks. This hands-on role is responsible for designing and implementing scalable data ingestion, reliable data processing, and strong technical controls across the Bronze and Silver layers of the medallion architecture. The role goes beyond basic data movement. The Data Engineer will understand the meaning, sensitivity, classification, and intended use of data flowing through pipelines, applying that understanding to design appropriate controls, access patterns, data quality checks, and segregation boundaries. This is critical in a highly regulated defense environment where data governance and security are paramount. Key responsibilities include: - Building and maintaining the enterprise lakehouse infrastructure on Databricks - Designing scalable ingestion patterns for multiple data sources - Implementing reliable data processing pipelines with strong quality controls - Establishing governed data foundations that support multiple business domains - Creating technical controls appropriate for a regulated defense organization - Designing data access patterns and segregation boundaries based on sensitivity and classification - Collaborating with downstream analytics teams and business domains This is a technical leadership role for someone with deep expertise in data engineering, lakehouse architecture, and the ability to think strategically about data governance in a complex, regulated environment. The ideal candidate has experience with Databricks, medallion architecture patterns, and understands the intersection of data engineering and compliance/security requirements.
