Canva is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Observability Insights, Metrics and Profiles Team. This role focuses on designing, building, and continuously improving observability platforms, pipelines, and tooling used across Canva's engineering organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architecting and maintaining observability infrastructure including metrics, continuous profiling, and alerting systems
- Providing technical leadership and expertise to drive pragmatic solutions and impactful design decisions
- Optimizing metrics and continuous profiling platforms for operational effectiveness and reliability
- Improving the user experience for metrics, profiling, and monitoring visualization and querying
- Serving as an observability champion, evangelizing best practices and guiding engineers across Canva
- Collaborating cross-functionally to ensure all engineers can effectively use observability platforms and insights
- Participating in team ceremonies, knowledge sharing, and brainstorming sessions
Required qualifications:
- Proficiency in Python, Golang, and/or Java
- Deep knowledge of Computer Engineering fundamentals and first principles
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Jsonnet, or similar)
- Practical experience with AWS services (EC2, EKS, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis, S3, MSK) or equivalents
- Hands-on experience with observability technologies (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or similar)
- Experience building and operating highly reliable, high-throughput distributed data pipeline systems with scalable databases
Desirable experience:
- Deep expertise with OpenTelemetry
- Large-scale metrics and monitoring infrastructure design and operation
- Distributed Prometheus clusters (Thanos, Cortex, Mimir, M3) or similar
- Data handling and pipelining at scale (Kinesis, Kafka)
- Kubernetes, particularly stateful workloads at scale
- Data security and obfuscation
- Alerting and SLA/SLO theory and best practices
