Canva is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Observability Insights, Metrics and Profiles Team. This role focuses on designing, building, and continuously improving observability platforms, pipelines, and tooling used across Canva's engineering organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building observability platforms, metrics pipelines, and continuous profiling infrastructure
- Providing technical leadership and expertise to drive pragmatic solutions and impactful design decisions
- Optimizing metrics and continuous profiling platforms for operational effectiveness and reliability
- Improving the user experience for metrics querying, visualization, and monitoring
- Serving as an observability champion, evangelizing best practices across the engineering organization
- Identifying and advocating for cross-functional solutions to ensure all engineers can effectively use observability tools
- Participating in team ceremonies, knowledge sharing, and brainstorming sessions
Required qualifications:
- Proficiency in Python, Golang, and/or Java
- Deep knowledge of Computer Engineering fundamentals and first principles
- Expertise with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Jsonnet, or equivalent)
- Practical experience with AWS services (EC2, EKS, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis, S3, MSK) or equivalent
- Experience with observability technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent
- Experience building highly reliable, available, high-throughput distributed data pipeline systems with scalable databases
Desirable experience:
- Deep expertise with OpenTelemetry
- Experience designing and running metrics and monitoring infrastructure at scale (Thanos, Cortex, Mimir, M3)
- Large-scale data handling and pipelining (Kinesis, Kafka)
- Kubernetes experience, particularly with stateful workloads at scale
- Data security and obfuscation experience
- Alerting and SLA/SLO theory and best practices
