AssemblyAI is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to bridge cutting-edge AI research and production systems. You'll own the full lifecycle of customer-facing APIs that expose new voice AI model capabilities—from prototype through launch and ongoing iteration. The role sits at the intersection of research and applied engineering, requiring you to productionize novel techniques and scale inference infrastructure supporting 1M+ API users and 600M+ monthly inference calls. Key responsibilities include designing and shipping customer-facing APIs that expose new model capabilities; scaling inference infrastructure to support massive production traffic; partnering with researchers to turn notebooks and POCs into production-grade systems with appropriate latency, reliability, and developer ergonomics; collaborating with customers and applied teams to understand real-world usage patterns and feed insights back into product and research direction; and contributing across the full stack—backend services, inference infrastructure, SDKs, and internal tooling. You'll need strong backend engineering experience, including building and supporting ML infrastructure and/or customer-facing APIs in production. The role demands comfort operating with ambiguity, as research and product timelines don't always align. Genuine curiosity about AI/ML is essential—you don't need to be a researcher, but you should understand model behavior well enough to make sound engineering decisions. Strong collaboration skills are critical, as you'll work daily with researchers, applied engineers, and customers with different contexts and priorities. AssemblyAI is a capital-efficient, high-growth AI company with under 100 employees generating ~$500K ARR per employee. The company processes 1M+ hours of audio daily, powers 2B+ end-user experiences, and serves thousands of customers including Granola, Fireflies, Figure AI, and CallRail. The team operates as a meritocracy with minimal bureaucracy, giving every person outsized ownership and impact. This is a rare opportunity to work on genuinely interesting problems at meaningful scale within a lean, fast-moving organization.
