The company recently launched Handshake AI, a rapidly scaling AI data business that has grown to ~$1B run rate, working directly with frontier AI labs on data-intensive post-training techniques.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Consumer Experience team, you will architect and build the products connecting millions of students with employers. This is a staff-level individual contributor role with significant technical influence and mentorship responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop consumer-facing features that enhance user engagement and streamline the student-employer connection process
- Architect and scale distributed systems supporting millions of users with high availability and performance requirements
- Influence technical direction across the team by collaborating with cross-functional partners to align engineering with business goals
- Mentor and elevate senior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and growth
- Champion engineering best practices that raise quality and team efficiency standards
Required qualifications:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with proven track record owning large-scale, complex systems
- Demonstrated staff-level scope experience influencing technical direction across multiple teams
- Expertise building and scaling distributed systems, ideally in consumer platforms or social products
- Strong proficiency in Go, Python, or JavaScript with focus on maintainable, high-quality production code
- Solid understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and modern system design principles
- Exceptional communication skills articulating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Experience mentoring senior engineers and elevating engineering culture
Desirable experience includes background in search, recommendations, ranking systems, personalization at scale, user identity knowledge graphs, AI-powered systems including LLM applications, and high-growth or rapidly scaling environments.
