Salary: GBP 120,000 - 168,000 / annual
Affirm's Identity team is mission-critical to the customer checkout experience. The team owns identity verification, KYC (Know Your Customer), user lifecycle management, and identity decisioning across multiple regulatory environments outside North America, playing a key role in Affirm's international expansion.
You will be a Senior Software Engineer on a team of six engineers based across Spain and Poland, responsible for turning ambiguous business and customer problems into reliable, well-designed technical solutions. This is a deeply technical, hands-on coding role where you'll spend most of your week in the codebase, leveraging AI tools to write robust Kotlin and Python, shipping impactful features, investigating complex production issues, and maintaining system reliability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning and delivering quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems
- Designing across system boundaries and driving collaboration with partner teams (product, design, analytics)
- Identifying and advocating for project, process, technology, and business improvements
- Supporting operations and availability through metrics, monitoring, and on-call participation
- Setting and improving code review and design standards across your team
- Mentoring engineers, supporting new hires and interns, and contributing to hiring
- Reducing toil, creating operational playbooks, and improving system health
This is a high-visibility, high-impact role focused on foundational systems that directly enable Affirm's global growth. You'll help shape quarterly technical direction, make performance and scale tradeoffs explicit, and leave systems better than you found them.
Requirements:
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin
- Track record developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs
- Ability to write high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others
- Proficiency making significant changes in large codebases with safe practices and tools
- Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders
- Strong verbal and written communication skills supporting effective global collaboration
