As a Senior Backend Software Engineer on the Data Layer team, you will design, build, and maintain backend services that store and serve Camunda 8's process data across relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch. You'll work on technically challenging projects including reshaping how process data is stored and retained, streaming data to external systems, and evolving secondary storage systems to perform at scale.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and maintain backend services for the data layer with focus on correctness, performance, and scale
- Own end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives, working with Product Management to translate requirements into solution designs
- Evolve how process data is processed, retained, and exposed to meet customer needs
- Improve performance and scalability of secondary storage systems and build operational tooling
- Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating production issues and feeding learnings back into the product
You'll bring at least 7 years of backend engineering experience with strong expertise in production data stores. Deep experience with both relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL) and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch is essential, including practical understanding of query performance, indexing, and data modeling trade-offs. You should have proven experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives end-to-end, from solution design through delivery, and be comfortable investigating slow queries and root-causing data-related production issues.
Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment are critical. Nice-to-haves include experience with workflow automation, CI pipeline building, and database migration tooling like Liquibase or Flyway.
