Salary: USD 150,000 - 225,000 / annual
Caladan Bio is automating biomanufacturing by building integrated hardware, software, and AI infrastructure to accelerate synthetic biology product development. The company's flagship product, the Caladan 250, is a high-performance benchtop bioreactor system enabling customers to run significantly more experiments efficiently.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will architect and design the digital platform powering Caladan's advanced bioreactor systems. You'll work full-stack with flexibility to lean toward frontend or backend, building core services and infrastructure that run hardware, automation, and machine learning platforms. Your key responsibility is architecting systems that control and orchestrate a fleet of modular lab instruments, processing high-density streams of fermentation data from hundreds of actuators and sensors.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with hardware, lab, and commercial teams to shape the user experience within the Caladan platform
- Building and maintaining software underpinning the entire Caladan ecosystem
- Integrating real-time bioreactor data into full-featured visualization and analysis tools
- Developing foundations for Caladan's data and machine learning systems
- Designing scalable APIs and data pipelines for experiment tracking, device management, and user interaction
- Writing tests, monitoring production performance, and improving system reliability
- Troubleshooting problems and communicating solutions effectively
- Contributing to overall system architecture and defining software development best practices
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years building and shipping software in production environments
- Expert-level proficiency in Python or React+TypeScript
- Strong fundamentals in software architecture, distributed systems, and debugging
- Sense of ownership across the entire product lifecycle
- Hands-on, collaborative mindset with interest in building physical systems
- Ability to work onsite in Brooklyn, NY headquarters
Nice-to-have experience includes biotech or lab automation, IoT/edge-device communication, UX design/research, shipping software for hardware products, and firmware-level languages.
