commercetools is seeking a Senior Search Backend Engineer to join the Search Foundation Team. You will design and implement modern search functionalities for a PaaS ecommerce platform, developing search-related libraries based on Elasticsearch and MongoDB. Your responsibilities include building scalable search infrastructure as code on Kubernetes using Terraform and multi-tenant architecture, testing software components for usability and performance, and participating in on-call rotations for production systems.
You'll work with Scala and functional programming patterns, collaborating closely with Product Management and DevOps teams. The role requires at least 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer on the JVM, with strong search experience (preferably Elasticsearch), a DevOps mindset, and practical expertise in server-side systems development. You should have solid understanding of parallel and asynchronous programming, non-blocking I/O, REST API development, and scalable architectures including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover patterns.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with event-driven architectures, Scala or functional programming languages, and infrastructure technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust. Fluent English is required for collaboration with international teams.
