commercetools is seeking a Senior Search Backend Engineer to join the Search Foundation Team. You will design and implement modern search functionalities for a PaaS ecommerce platform, developing a comprehensive search API for product discovery and cross-domain search capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement search functionalities in a Scala-based backend
- Develop search-related libraries leveraging ElasticSearch and MongoDB
- Build and maintain scalable search infrastructure as code on Kubernetes using Terraform and multi-tenant architecture patterns
- Collaborate with Product Management and DevOps teams on testing, performance optimization, and usability
- Participate in on-call rotations supporting worldwide distributed production systems
You bring at least 5 years of software engineering experience with JVM-based languages, with demonstrated expertise in search systems (preferably ElasticSearch). You have a strong DevOps mindset and practical experience developing server-side systems, REST APIs, and scalable architectures including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover patterns. You understand parallel and asynchronous programming, non-blocking I/O, and are interested in pragmatic functional programming with Scala.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with event-driven architectures, other functional programming languages, and infrastructure tooling. You're curious about AI tools and how to apply them effectively in your work. Fluent English is required for collaboration in international teams.
This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in one of commercetools' offices: Munich, Berlin, London, or Valencia.
