commercetools is seeking a Senior Search Backend Engineer to join the Search Foundation Team. You'll design and implement modern search functionalities for a PaaS ecommerce platform, developing integrated search experiences that power product discovery across domains.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement search functionalities in a Scala-based backend
- Develop search-related libraries leveraging ElasticSearch and MongoDB
- Build and maintain scalable search infrastructure as code on Kubernetes using Terraform and multi-tenant architecture
- Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance
- Collaborate closely with Product Management and DevOps teams
- Participate in on-call rotations supporting worldwide distributed production systems
You bring at least 5 years of software engineering experience with JVM languages, with demonstrated expertise in search systems (preferably ElasticSearch). You have a strong DevOps mindset and practical experience developing server-side systems. You understand parallel and asynchronous programming, non-blocking I/O, REST API development, and scalable architectures including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover patterns.
While Scala experience is valuable, the role emphasizes learning functional programming pragmatically. You're a creative problem-solver who thrives in complex challenges, brings curiosity to continuous growth, and work fluently in English within international teams. The role is hybrid, requiring three days per week in Munich, Berlin, London, or Valencia offices.
