GitLab is seeking a Senior Professional Services Engineer based in Japan to deliver customer-facing implementation and advisory services. In this role, you will work directly with enterprise customers to design and execute GitLab installations, migrations, training, and advisory engagements. You'll manage projects ranging from single-node Omnibus deployments to large-scale reference architectures using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible) and Configuration as Code practices across AWS, GCP, and Azure.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering end-to-end Professional Services engagements including installation, migration, training, and advisory services
- Planning and executing deployments from simple to complex architectures using IaC/CaC tools
- Leading migrations from competing systems to GitLab SaaS or self-managed deployments
- Partnering with Engagement Managers and Project Managers to improve delivery consistency and refine processes
- Serving as a trusted technical advisor, translating customer goals into practical implementation plans
- Interfacing with GitLab's product and engineering teams to unblock customer outcomes and share feedback
- Mentoring Associate and Intermediate Professional Services Engineers
- Managing multiple concurrent customer engagements, either as primary engineer or lead
You'll work in a fully remote, largely asynchronous environment, collaborating across time zones with a distributed team. The role requires strong communication skills, solution-oriented problem-solving, and the ability to balance multiple complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Professional experience with one or more Infrastructure as Code or Configuration as Code technologies (Terraform, Ansible, Packer, Puppet, or Chef)
- Professional experience with two or more cloud providers (AWS, GCP, or Microsoft Azure)
- Experience using, deploying, or configuring GitLab with solid understanding of Git and source control workflows
- Experience delivering customer-facing services (installation, migration, training, advisory) across GitLab's feature set
- Proven ability to independently manage one or more projects and lead other Professional Services Engineers on complex engagements
- Strong English communication skills (written and verbal) with ability to provide clear status updates and build consensus in remote, asynchronous environments
- Demonstrated solution-oriented approach: identifying root causes, proposing options and tradeoffs, driving issues to resolution while managing multiple engagements
- Ability to work effectively in fully remote organization: clear written communication, decision documentation, asynchronous collaboration across time zones, alignment with GitLab values
- Must be located in Japan with full working rights in Japan
