Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering empirical geospatial data via a cloud-based platform to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. As Senior Product Manager for Defense & Intelligence Mission Solutions, you will own the connective tissue between Planet's shared Global Monitoring Service (GMS) and Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) platforms and specialized defense & intelligence solutions.
You will translate defense workflows into platform specifications, ensuring core architectures support high-consequence operational environments. Your primary focus is technical delivery—partnering closely with Forward Deployed Engineering teams to build robust extension points and APIs that convert field-validated, customer-specific patterns into durable, reusable platform capabilities. You will help prioritize which mission requirements warrant investment in the shared platform versus single-customer solutions, keeping D&I requirements visible against company-wide objectives including image-to-insight latency and site onboarding speed.
Your responsibilities include scaling demand intake across field engineering, sales, and product counterparts into a prioritized D&I roadmap, and driving vertical product strategy to evolve GMS and MDA into packaged offerings aligned with defense procurement and operational models. As the team grows, your scope will expand into end-to-end vertical solutioning including market packaging and long-term product strategy.
You bring 6+ years of technical product management experience bridging core platform teams and technical field teams. You have proven understanding of geospatial data platforms, cloud architectures, APIs, extension layers, and analytics/ML pipelines. You excel at separating generalizable platform capabilities from one-off customizations and have a track record of prioritizing backlogs across competing technical and operational demands. Background in geospatial intelligence, satellite tasking/monitoring, remote sensing, or defense technology is required. You articulate technical trade-offs and mission impact clearly to both engineers and executives, and work independently with minimal oversight while managing multiple concurrent priorities.
Standout candidates have experience scaling vertical product layers on shared platform infrastructure, active or prior U.S. Security Clearance (Secret or TS/SCI), and operational experience within or supporting the U.S. Defense & Intelligence Community. This is a full-time hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in San Francisco, Arlington, or Denver offices.
