January is transforming consumer debt collections from a crisis-driven emergency room model into proactive primary care. The company has serviced over $20 billion in debt across 20+ million consumers and achieves 50% higher customer satisfaction than traditional banks while generating 30% better net recovery for creditors.
You'll own one of the company's highest-leverage surfaces: how they reach consumers, communicate with them, and build trust to turn missed payments into fresh starts. The role reports directly to Founder and CEO Jake Cahan and is critical as the company scales from a single-product collections business into a multi-product platform across the consumer credit lifecycle.
Two teams are hiring: one owns the LLM infrastructure powering all consumer conversations (chatbot, voice, email, text), pushing toward real-time adaptive borrower experiences. The other owns the communication systems sending millions of messages hourly plus the experimentation engine behind them, building toward self-tuning outbound that learns what to say and when without human intervention.
Both roles require setting new standards through opinionated strategy, experiments proving what works, and systems enabling the team to make good decisions independently. You'll thrive in high-stakes environments where legal, ethical, and financial constraints sharpen rather than limit creativity.
The company emphasizes decentralization, speed over perfection, candor, and writing for clarity. AI is deeply embedded—they've built proprietary code reviewers and voice AI handling most inbound calls with zero hallucinated payments. Engineers ship 3-4x more PRs than industry average. You'll push AI integration further than most companies allow.
The team is strong and new hires make immediate impact—one doubled a key ML model's effectiveness in their first week. The company operates in-person at least three days weekly in their Nolita office, believing random interactions cross-pollinate ideas and face time builds trust.
