Focal Systems is an AI-first company building retail automation solutions using deep learning and computer vision. The company is headquartered in San Francisco with operations across Canada, the UK, and Poland, and has deployed solutions at scale with major global retailers.
As Senior Product Manager, you will own the complete data lifecycle at Focal: from how retailer data (planograms, inventory, store metadata) enters the platform, through the pipelines that transform it into actionable signals, to the metrics and dashboards that drive head-office decision-making. You will be the bridge between data engineering, data science, analytics, customer success, and retail customers themselves.
This is a hands-on role requiring both strategic vision and technical depth. You will set direction and priorities as the platform scales to hundreds of new stores, while remaining deeply involved in engineering design conversations, data analysis, and customer discussions. You are expected to write SQL queries, interrogate data independently, and hold strong positions in customer conversations—including delivering unwelcome answers.
Key responsibilities include: owning product direction for the full data path and resolving competing priorities; managing how customer data ingests into the platform; defining metrics, reporting APIs, and AI-generated insights that customers act on; running discovery with retailers and translating learnings into products; shipping features and measuring adoption; and automating your own work with AI to share with the product team.
You will work with a distributed, remote-first team and travel occasionally for store and customer visits. The role demands someone who understands system costs and trade-offs, thrives at team boundaries where ownership is shared, can change their mind in technical debates, and builds durable systems (runbooks, tooling, documented decisions) that don't depend on any single person.
