9amHealth is an AI-enabled virtual specialty care platform managing high-cost chronic conditions (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia) at scale. The company partners with employers, health plans, and pharmacy benefit managers to deliver comprehensive care through specialized clinicians, at-home lab testing, medications, and lifestyle support.
You will lead design across 9amHealth's member app, a central platform where people manage their chronic care. This is a senior individual contributor role spanning labs, medications, virtual visits, education, nutrition, and tracking. Your work will focus on easing the burden of managing complex conditions without adding unnecessary friction.
Key responsibilities include: leading design from discovery through implementation and iteration; designing onboarding, care tasks, and habit-building experiences that help members understand and act on their next steps; using data to define success metrics (activation, funnel conversion, task completion, retention, engagement) and connecting them to member value; building prototypes beyond Figma when needed, including code-based and AI-assisted exploration; conducting research to understand member needs and test assumptions; collaborating with designers and engineers to evolve the design system; working with clinicians and care coordinators to understand how member-facing decisions affect Care Team workflows; and making and documenting difficult trade-offs between member needs, clinical considerations, operational capacity, and business goals.
The member app connects directly to 9amHealth's in-house electronic medical record system. Clinical data informs what members see, and member actions trigger Care Team workflows. You'll need to understand these connections and account for both care recipients and care delivery teams.
You'll report to the Head of Design and work day-to-day with a product manager, front-end and back-end engineers, and QA. You'll also collaborate with other product designers across member and Care Team experiences. The product and engineering team is distributed across San Diego, California, and Vienna, Austria. This role works Eastern Time hours to support collaboration with both locations.
**Requirements:**
- Strong craft backed by product judgment: demonstrated leadership of design for a consumer product or substantial product area, from ambiguous problem to shipped outcome, with attention to interaction, visual hierarchy, content, and finishing details
- Clear point of view: bring ideas, challenge assumptions, explain choices, critique your own work, respond to feedback, and change direction when evidence warrants it
- Comfort with product metrics: ability to explain what changed after launch, how it was measured, and what was done next; ability to combine quantitative data with research to understand why something is or isn't working
- Thoughtful behavior-change design: understanding of motivation, progress, and setbacks; ability to help people build habits and return after lapses without relying on guilt, pressure, or counterproductive rewards
- Research skills: ability to choose appropriate methods, ask useful questions, and turn findings into product or priority changes
- Fluency with modern prototyping tools: knowing when Figma is sufficient and when to build something more functional; ability to use AI-assisted tools, evaluate output critically, and refine to standards
- Practical understanding of accessibility: ability to design interfaces and information accessible to people with different abilities, health literacy levels, and technology confidence
- Initiative and clear communication: ability to work with incomplete information, ask sharp questions, make progress, and bring the team along through clear writing and direct conversation
