Abridge is seeking a Senior Product Counsel to serve as the primary legal advisor for teams developing AI and machine learning products in healthcare. The role focuses on advising product teams building ambient clinical documentation, agentic workflows, and multimodal healthcare experiences.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partnering with product and engineering teams to identify and mitigate AI-specific legal risks, including model behavior, output accuracy, intellectual property, data provenance, training rights, and liability for AI-generated content
- Developing flexible legal processes, frameworks, and contract language suited to the pace of frontier AI development rather than relying solely on industry precedent
- Serving as internal expert on AI legal and policy matters, shaping Abridge's positions on emerging AI regulation and representing those positions with external counsel, regulators, and industry groups
- Supporting privacy impact assessments, model risk assessments, and data governance frameworks specific to AI training, fine-tuning, and deployment
- Partnering with legal, product, and compliance stakeholders on AI principles including transparency, accountability, and human oversight
Required qualifications:
- 8+ years of legal experience, including 4+ years counseling on AI, machine learning, or other emerging technology products
- Prior in-house legal experience required
- Working knowledge of AI-specific legal issues: IP and copyright in AI-generated content, training data rights, model liability, and responsible AI principles
- Ability to translate complex regulatory and technical AI concepts into clear guidance for non-legal audiences
- Comfort operating with ambiguity, tight timelines, and novel legal questions without settled precedent
- Strong ownership mentality and intellectual curiosity about technology
Bonus experience includes prior in-house roles at growth-stage AI or healthcare technology companies, and strong understanding of federal and state healthcare laws (HIPAA, data privacy) as applied to AI systems.
The role is hybrid with Monday/Wednesday/Friday in-office days at either the San Francisco or New York City office.
