Sierra is building an AI platform that enables companies to create better, more human customer experiences. The company partners with industry leaders like SoftBank, Uber, Rivian, and Sutter Health, and is founded by Bret Taylor (former Salesforce co-CEO, Facebook CTO, Google Maps co-creator) and Clay Bavor (18-year Google veteran who led Google Labs and AR/VR initiatives).
As Senior Privacy Counsel, you'll be a core member of Sierra's growing legal team, reporting to the Associate General Counsel for Product and Privacy. This is a high-impact role combining privacy counseling, AI regulatory expertise, and commercial legal support.
Key responsibilities include: advising product, engineering, operations, and marketing teams on global privacy compliance (GDPR, EU AI Act, DORA, etc.); building and owning Sierra's privacy counseling and compliance program as the company scales; developing expertise in privacy regulation for regulated industries (healthcare, insurance, banking, financial services, telecommunications); drafting and negotiating data processing agreements, business associate agreements, and privacy-related commercial terms; managing privacy incident response and notification obligations; and developing training materials for product and business teams.
You'll also lead AI regulatory work, advising on emerging AI-specific privacy regulations, developing AI governance policies and frameworks, monitoring global AI and privacy regulations, and representing Sierra in discussions with regulators and industry groups.
Required qualifications: 8+ years of legal experience combining large international law firm and in-house tech company work; deep knowledge of global privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA, US state privacy laws) and AI regulatory frameworks (EU AI Act, NIST AI Risk Management Framework); passion for AI with understanding of AI products, LLMs, and related legal issues; experience mentoring and managing junior team members; extensive DPA, BAA, and privacy commercial negotiation experience; ability to assess privacy risks in a hyperscaling context with sound judgment; strong analytical and communication skills; and strong work ethic with attention to detail.
Preferred: privacy program building experience in regulated industries or high-growth tech; regulator and policymaker engagement experience; CIPP/US or CIPP/E certification; trust and safety or responsible AI program development; and startup experience.
