Crux is a capital platform modernizing how clean energy and critical infrastructure projects raise and deploy capital. The company operates across advisory, investments, technology, and intelligence, with 120+ team members and $77M in backing from top-tier VCs and strategic energy investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Lowercarbon Capital, and Pattern Energy.
The Senior Principal, Debt is a senior deal leader on the Debt Business Management team within Capital Solutions, reporting to the Head of Debt. This role owns a book of debt mandates across Crux's three debt motions: debt origination, debt advisory, and debt attached to tax equity and preferred equity structures. You will lead transactions spanning construction, term, and back-leverage facilities, tax equity and credit bridge loans, equipment financing, and green bonds and securitization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead debt mandates from initial opportunity identification through close as the primary negotiator and senior execution lead, managing lender diligence, structuring, negotiation, documentation, and institutional-grade closing
- Own transaction velocity and close rates, directly contributing to Debt team revenue and P&L targets
- Author credit memos and pricing recommendations; present transactions to Credit Committee with rigorous analysis of credit quality, structural terms, risks, and mitigants
- Lead deal teams of junior staff—staffing transactions, reviewing underwriting and financial models, and mentoring on credit and execution
- Execute debt transactions with lenders and institutional capital providers in partnership with Strategic Bank Capital and Strategic Institutional Capital teams
- Partner with Industry Coverage to qualify opportunities early and provide real-time market and financeability feedback
- Collaborate with Investments on tax equity and preferred equity attach motions, sourcing and pricing competitive debt within agreed timelines
- Lead specific workstreams within the Head of Debt's product agenda (new lender programs, financing structures, term sheet standards) in partnership with Structuring
- Build and standardize repeatable execution processes across debt motions; drive adoption of AI-enabled modeling and automation
- Partner with Product and Engineering to define and prioritize transaction tooling that increases deal throughput and execution quality
- Represent Crux in industry and market dialogues—webinars, whitepapers, conferences—in coordination with coverage relationship owners
The role requires a passion for the clean energy transition, a builder's mindset, and commitment to delivering results in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. You will thrive solving complex problems and working collaboratively across teams.
Crux operates a remote-first model with optional offices in DC, NYC, and SF, plus co-working opportunities in Seattle, Denver, Boston, LA, and beyond. The company brings together clean energy finance experts with cutting-edge technology, including AI applications across deal execution and client experience. Culture emphasizes high ownership, rapid growth, and regular team offsites (2x annually).
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related field; MBA, JD, or advanced degree a plus
- 10–12+ years of total experience, including 7+ years in renewable energy project finance, infrastructure debt, or structured lending
- Track record of leading construction, term, back-leverage, or debt capital markets transactions as the primary negotiator
- Deep expertise in project finance debt structures for solar, wind, and storage, including hands-on negotiation of credit agreements, intercreditor arrangements, and interplay between tax equity and debt
- Experience preparing and presenting transactions to credit or investment committee, ideally from both lender and sponsor/advisory perspectives
- Experience leading and mentoring deal teams, including reviewing junior team members' underwriting and modeling work
- Exceptional negotiation and relationship skills with developers, lenders, and investors; credibility to lead senior-level conversations
- Strong judgment and comfort operating with high autonomy in a fast-scaling environment
- Strong interest in leveraging technology and AI to improve debt execution
- FINRA SIE, Series 79, and Series 63 required or willingness to obtain under Crux's broker-dealer sponsorship
