Anthropic is seeking a Senior Payroll Manager to own US and Canada payroll operations end-to-end while managing 1–2 direct reports on the US team. You will report directly to the Head of Global Payroll and serve as a key leader ensuring North American payroll scales with Anthropic's rapid growth.
You will be responsible for full-cycle US payroll processing across multiple states and frequencies, including complex equity compensation (RSUs, ISOs, NSOs) with accurate tax withholding and timely reporting. You'll manage high-volume payments such as bonuses, commissions, severance, and equity events, oversee quarter-end and year-end reconciliations, and resolve federal and state tax notices. You will maintain and continuously improve Workday payroll configuration, identifying automation opportunities and leading optimization initiatives.
For Canada operations, you'll oversee payroll in partnership with PwC Global Payroll Platform, developing expertise in CRA compliance, T4s, Records of Employment, and multi-province processing. You'll partner with the international payroll team to ensure Canada integrates into global compliance and build out Canada payroll SOPs as the function matures.
You will manage and develop your direct reports, set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and invest in their growth. You'll build a team culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement, and serve as the escalation point for complex payroll issues and employee inquiries.
Cross-functionally, you'll partner with Corporate Accounting on payroll journal entries and month-end close, work with Tax, Benefits, People Systems, and Employment Legal to ensure data integrity and compliance, and support audit readiness and internal controls. You'll champion AI tool adoption within payroll—identifying high-value use cases for reconciliation, anomaly detection, and reporting—and lead process improvement projects that reduce manual effort and increase accuracy.
Required: 8+ years payroll experience with at least 3 years in a senior or manager-level role owning US multi-state payroll end-to-end; CPP certification; direct people management experience; strong Workday experience (payroll module preferred); deep familiarity with equity compensation and tax implications; ability to thrive in fast-moving, ambiguous environments; strong cross-functional instincts.
Preferred: Canada payroll experience; experience with AI or automation tools for payroll workflows; Workday payroll implementation or system migration experience; experience scaling payroll infrastructure at rapidly growing companies (500 to 2,000+ employees).
