Hugging Face is seeking a Senior Open-Source Python Engineer to join the Applications team, which builds developer tooling for machine learning on top of the Hugging Face Hub. You'll work on libraries like Gradio (used by 1M+ developers monthly), Trackio (an agent-friendly experiment tracking platform), and FastRTC (real-time audio/video streaming), as well as new projects from inception.
Key responsibilities include designing and maintaining core features across these libraries with a focus on scalability and developer experience; architecting complex Python projects and frameworks that serve as foundational tools for the ML community; growing early-stage libraries by defining APIs, writing documentation and demos, and driving adoption; working on real-time streaming and networking capabilities; collaborating with open-source contributors through code reviews and community engagement; integrating modern frontend technologies into Python-based web applications; and adapting to evolving engineering challenges.
The role is fluid and dynamic, with significant ownership over taking projects from early users to widespread adoption. You'll shape API design, ship fast, and get tools into developers' hands. A large part of the work involves working on libraries still in their early stages, some starting from scratch.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field
- 5+ years of professional Python development experience
- Experience architecting complex Python projects or frameworks
- Track record of taking early-stage libraries or products from first users to broad adoption
- Professional experience with JavaScript or TypeScript
- Professional experience with a modern frontend framework (React or Svelte)
- Experience core-contributing to or maintaining open-source software projects
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with real-time audio/video streaming or networking (WebRTC, WebSockets)
- Contributions to libraries such as pipecat, LiveKit, FastAPI, or Starlette
