Hugging Face is seeking a Senior Open-Source Python Engineer to join the Applications team, which builds developer tooling for machine learning on top of the Hugging Face Hub. You'll work on libraries including Gradio (used by 1M+ developers monthly), Trackio (a local-first experiment tracking platform), FastRTC (real-time audio/video streaming), and emerging projects.
Key responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain core features across the team's Python libraries, ensuring scalability, reliability, and ease of use for ML developers
- Architect complex Python projects and frameworks that serve as foundational tools for the ML community
- Take early-stage libraries from first users to widespread adoption: shape APIs, write demos and documentation, drive developer adoption
- Work on real-time streaming and networking capabilities, a core priority for Gradio 7 and beyond
- Collaborate with open-source contributors through code reviews, discussions, and community support
- Integrate modern frontend technologies to create seamless user experiences for Python-based web applications
- Adapt to evolving engineering challenges and contribute to the direction of developer tools

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field
- 5+ years of professional Python development experience
- Experience architecting complex Python projects or frameworks
- Track record of taking early-stage libraries or products from first users to broad adoption
- Professional experience with JavaScript or TypeScript
- Professional experience with a modern frontend framework (React, Svelte, or similar)
- Experience core-contributing to or maintaining open-source software projects
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with real-time audio/video streaming or networking (WebRTC, WebSockets)
- Contributions to libraries such as pipecat, LiveKit, FastAPI, or Starlette
