Airbnb is seeking a Senior Manager of Technical Brand & Content to build and lead the function that amplifies the company's engineering work to the external world and prospective talent. The role owns the complete technical brand strategy, with direct access to engineering leaders and the CTO. Key responsibilities include: - Own and operate the Airbnb Tech Blog end-to-end: source topics from engineering teams, coach engineer-authors, edit to high editorial standards, and shepherd content through legal, security, and comms review while maintaining a reliable publishing cadence. - Identify cross-team technical narratives and publish connected story sets that show how individual strong posts add up to a coherent engineering narrative. - Build public presence for engineers and technical leaders through bylines, conference talks, speaker coaching, and a pipeline of new voices. Partner closely with the CTO to establish his public technical presence. - Own distribution strategy: establish a canonical technical home on an Airbnb-owned domain, build missing distribution surfaces (video, social channels), and ensure strong publishing reaches the right audiences. - Set conference and event strategy—where Airbnb speaks, sponsors, and hosts—and manage external presence including academic collaborations and technical media relationships. - Steward the open source program to ensure public claims are accurate, projects are maintained, and initiatives reflect Airbnb's desired brand. - Measure impact by connecting technical brand work to hiring outcomes (inbound senior pipeline, offer acceptance at staff level and above in ML and infrastructure) and provide honest attribution analysis. This is a rare opportunity to build a function from the ground up with real autonomy, minimal inherited process, and direct influence on how the engineering world perceives Airbnb. The engineering work is genuinely strong and well-documented; the gap is distribution and narrative. Requirements: - Substantial hands-on experience in technical content, developer relations, engineering communications, or technical editorial, including direct work with engineers (not adjacent roles). - Technical fluency: ability to hold your own in systems design conversations, read design docs, and judge technical accuracy. Credibility with staff-level engineers is essential. - Strong editorial judgment and craft: ability to sharpen engineer drafts without flattening voice, and distinguish between posts that teach versus announce. - Proven ability to influence without direct authority: build systems and incentives that motivate busy senior people, rather than relying on persistence. - Program discipline: end-to-end ownership of events, budgets, and vendors. - Measurement literacy: connect brand work to funnel outcomes and understand attribution limits. - Judgment on risk: experience navigating legal and security review, knowing what should and shouldn't be published. Nice to have: - Experience migrating technical publications between platforms (including SEO and redirects). - Experience running or fixing an open source program. - Experience helping senior executives build public technical presence. - Familiarity with AI/ML engineering topics and academic or research communications. - Video or multi-format content experience.
