Checkout.com is a global fintech payments platform processing over 10 billion transactions yearly for clients including eBay, Spotify, Klarna, Uber, and Sony. The company operates across 20 offices on six continents with London as headquarters. You will lead indirect tax and VAT matters across Checkout.com's fast-moving global fintech business, reporting to the Head of Tax. This role blends technical tax expertise with process transformation and modernization. You will oversee outsourced tax service providers while challenging legacy processes and implementing AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and scalability. Key responsibilities include: - Lead VAT and indirect tax advisory across the UK and international footprint, providing practical guidance on products, transactions, business changes, and expansion - Oversee outsourced indirect tax compliance across jurisdictions, ensuring accurate and timely filings - Reassess and improve the outsource model, clarifying roles, improving service levels, and modernizing end-to-end processes - Own indirect tax processes, controls, and documentation, including repeatable activities and key judgements - Use data from Workday, Looker, and BigQuery to interrogate transactions, validate outputs, and improve decision-making - Partner with Finance, Accounting, Product, Legal, Operations, and Data teams to embed tax considerations into business decisions - Support systems and process change initiatives by translating tax requirements into practical data and control needs - Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, and strengthen workflows using AI and emerging tools - Monitor legislative and business changes and translate them into actions for the tax operating model - Manage indirect tax audits, queries, and adviser relationships while maintaining strong controls - Contribute to team culture with ownership, openness to change, and continuous improvement mindset Required qualifications: - Qualified accountant and/or tax adviser - Significant VAT/indirect tax experience across advisory and in-house environments - Strong financial services experience essential; payments, fintech, or regulated environment experience highly advantageous - Proven experience overseeing outsource providers and optimizing delivery models - Strong technical knowledge of UK and international VAT/indirect tax principles - Demonstrable experience improving processes, controls, and operating models - Confidence working with data and financial systems (Workday, Looker, BigQuery, spreadsheets) - Comfortable experimenting with AI-enabled tools - Strong communication and stakeholder management skills - Hands-on, curious, delivery-focused with sound judgement - Ability to balance detail, pace, and competing priorities
