The Senior Manager, Data Engineering role is a tech lead manager position reporting directly to the CTO. This is a hybrid hands-on and leadership role, split approximately 60% individual contributor engineering and 40% team leadership. You will manage a small team of three data engineers and analysts while setting technical standards and contributing directly to complex data challenges.
Key responsibilities include: leading the data team while maintaining hands-on technical contributions; owning the entire data pipeline from warehouse to internal dashboards to external reporting; driving technical recommendations for data infrastructure decisions and vendor selections; partnering with the Risk team to build structured insurance reporting processes including actuarial and bordereau reports; consolidating siloed analysis across the organization to create unified reporting standards; enabling self-service analytics capabilities while maintaining data governance; and collaborating on the data roadmap aligned with business objectives.
Ideal candidates bring 6+ years of production data pipeline experience with hands-on expertise across the full data stack: data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery), dbt, ETL tools (Fivetran, Stitch, Airflow), and BI platforms (Tableau, Looker). Fintech or insurtech background with experience maintaining financial product reporting (actuarial reports, loan tapes) is highly valued. You should have proven experience managing and mentoring data engineers and analysts while contributing meaningful individual contributor work, and strong cross-functional collaboration skills.
