Mercury, a fintech platform serving startups and technology companies with banking, treasury, and financial workflow solutions, is seeking a Senior Manager of Data & AI Governance to build and lead an enterprise-wide governance program. Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, this leader will establish practical standards for how data and AI are owned, developed, used, protected, and monitored across the organization.
The role combines governance and risk-management expertise with technical fluency to work effectively across Data, Engineering, Product, Information Security, Legal, Compliance, and business teams. The ideal candidate is comfortable building governance frameworks in a fast-moving environment while supporting responsible innovation without unnecessary complexity.
Key responsibilities include developing and implementing Mercury's enterprise Data and AI Governance frameworks, policies, and standards; establishing clear accountability for data ownership, stewardship, quality, lineage, classification, access, and retention; creating risk-based governance processes for AI use cases across their lifecycle; developing responsible-AI principles addressing transparency, explainability, fairness, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance; maintaining an enterprise inventory of material data assets and AI use cases; defining risk-based classifications and governance requirements; establishing governance for internally developed, vendor-provided, and embedded AI capabilities including generative AI; partnering with Product, Engineering, and Data teams to embed governance into development processes; coordinating with Model Risk Management on model definitions; partnering with Information Security on data protection and access; partnering with Legal and Compliance on regulatory and privacy requirements; developing processes for identifying and remediating data and AI risks; establishing metrics and reporting for management and Board visibility; monitoring regulatory developments and industry practices; supporting governance forums and committees; eventually building and leading a Data & AI Governance team; and promoting a culture treating data as an enterprise asset and AI as responsible and transparent.
Required qualifications include 10+ years in data governance, AI governance, technology risk, information governance, model risk, privacy, compliance, or related discipline; demonstrated experience building or enhancing a data governance or AI governance program; strong understanding of data ownership, stewardship, quality, lineage, metadata, classification, access, and retention; working knowledge of AI and machine-learning concepts including generative AI, LLMs, explainability, bias, and performance monitoring; experience developing practical, risk-based policies in fast-moving tech environments; ability to distinguish among data governance, AI governance, model risk, information security, privacy, and compliance while coordinating across functions; strong judgment balancing innovation, customer outcomes, regulatory expectations, and risk; demonstrated ability to influence senior executives and technical teams without formal authority; excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience leading teams and managing cross-functional programs; and strong first and second line of defense judgment.
