Vercel is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to support product innovation and development velocity. This is a senior individual contributor role reporting to the VP of Legal, focused on product counseling with occasional support for commercial transactions.
You will partner closely with Engineering, Product, and Design teams to provide comprehensive legal support throughout the product development lifecycle. Key responsibilities include identifying and resolving issues related to privacy, data security, AI, platform safety, marketing, competition, and intellectual property. You'll translate evolving laws and market expectations into practical guidance for fast-moving teams, help build scalable processes and templates to accelerate shipping, and engage on special projects including sales support, partnerships, procurement, and M&A where product knowledge is critical.
The ideal candidate has 8+ years of legal experience, including 4+ years in product legal at a software company. You should have significant experience counseling product and engineering teams through the full development lifecycle, strong understanding of cloud services and SaaS/PaaS/IaaS business practices, and familiarity with global regulatory requirements. You're comfortable forming and communicating points of view under time pressure with imperfect information, thrive as a generalist, and have strong judgment in risk assessment and mitigation. Experience independently managing and negotiating technology agreements is essential. You prefer fast-paced, highly variable environments and have a proven track record at hyper-growth companies. You enjoy mentoring legal teammates and are admitted to the California Bar or eligible for Registered In-House Counsel exception.
Bonus qualifications include a computer science degree or technical background in software engineering, experience with commercial transactions, IP, open source, or platform safety, and familiarity with Vercel's products.
