Monzo is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its Legal and Board Governance Collective, reporting to the Director of Legal for Payments & Business Banking. This role focuses on digital assets, payments, and emerging financial technologies—areas at the intersection of rapid regulatory evolution and product innovation. You will serve as a legal business partner to product, engineering, operations, and compliance teams across Monzo Bank. Your primary responsibilities include advising on legal and regulatory requirements for digital assets and emerging payment technologies; identifying and evaluating legal risks proactively; developing scalable, efficient ways of working that enable rapid growth while maintaining regulatory compliance; and providing training and knowledge-sharing across the organization. Key activities include partnering with product managers on digital asset initiatives; collaborating with the Director of Product Legal and General Counsel; advising on evolving UK and EU regulatory frameworks; working with Risk, Compliance, FinCrime, and Operations teams; and managing relationships with external law firms to optimize costs and quality. You will often act as the sole legal advisor on complex, unique business activities, requiring strong judgment, proactive issue identification, and the ability to translate legal constraints into commercial solutions. The role spans personal and business banking products, but digital assets and emerging technologies are the primary focus. Monzo is a UK-based fintech that has evolved from a prepaid card to a full-service digital bank offering personal accounts, business banking, joint accounts, credit cards, savings, investments, and pensions.
