CCP Games (Fenris Creations) is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join the team in Reykjavík, Iceland. You will design and build the distributed systems that power EVE Online, a persistent-world AAA MMO with tens of thousands of players sharing a single simulation with no instancing. In this role, you will own critical infrastructure challenges: designing distributed systems that partition and rebalance simulation load across nodes; maintaining state consistency under partial failure while gracefully degrading individual regions rather than cascading failures; architecting messaging and RPC paths with millisecond-level latency budgets; and decomposing services with clear boundaries, replication strategies, and caching layers. You will write production code, shepherd designs from review through deployment, manage priorities and deadlines, instrument systems with telemetry, and load/failure test designs before they go live. You'll collaborate closely with product owners and game designers to understand feature demands and translate them into platform capabilities within real operational constraints. This is a permanent, full-time hybrid role reporting to Mei Walker. The company offers a multicultural work environment, double workstation setup, flexible work arrangements, regular team events, excellent on-site canteen, discretionary performance sharing, annual sports grant, mobile phone and package, home internet, conditional transportation grant, on-site doctor and discounted services, and a relocation package. REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years professional software development with deep expertise in distributed or concurrent systems - Strong proficiency in at least one systems/backend language (Go, C++, Rust, Java, or Python); judgment to choose the right tool for the problem - Proven track record designing distributed systems: service/API boundaries, consistency and coordination models, replication, partitioning, graceful degradation - Solid fundamentals: complexity analysis, concurrency/synchronization, queueing behavior, CAP theorem and latency tradeoffs - Comfortable with distributed communication patterns: RPC, pub/sub, message queues, event streaming - Experience with data stores at scale (relational and nonrelational), caching, and replication strategies - Production operations experience with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure) and Kubernetes - Proficiency with telemetry tools (tracing, metrics, structured logging via OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus) - Load and failure testing mindset NICE TO HAVE: - Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related technical field (equivalent practical experience equally welcome) - Infrastructure as code and automated delivery (Terraform, Packer, Ansible) - Networking and systems fundamentals (UNIX, TCP/IP, load balancing, CDNs) for end-to-end debugging
