Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Equipment Engineering Project Manager to lead the transition of fusion energy products from development to full-scale manufacturing. You will work across cross-functional teams including product design, quality assurance, supply chain, and production to ensure successful product introduction to manufacturing.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead projects by defining work scope, establishing Work Breakdown Structures, and creating logic-tied schedules and cost estimates
- Develop, execute, and report on project plans, managing milestones, budgets, staffing, and BOMs
- Evaluate new project requests by gathering information and analyzing project problems; work with team managers to anticipate technical, operational, and people challenges
- Guide project teams in mitigating near and medium-term risks; actively anticipate risks that could impact budgets and timelines
- Communicate project plans, issues, risks, and solutions to leadership and stakeholders through verbal and written updates
- Ensure project team members have necessary context to execute tasks independently
- Partner with supply chain teams to manage vendor relationships and ensure timely engineering deliverables and design reviews
The ideal candidate has a strong engineering background, excellent problem-solving skills, and proven experience moving products from R&D into manufacturing. You will operate mostly independently, making project decisions that positively impact success.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering field (minimum)
- Minimum 8 years of experience in engineering and project management
- Proven track record managing hardware or equipment engineering projects
- Proficiency with project management frameworks and approaches
- Solid understanding of key engineering disciplines with ability to build deeper technical knowledge
- Ability to adapt project plans to evolving strategic priorities and help teams adjust to moderate changes
- Experience with Jira and Confluence; familiarity with modern scheduling tools (MS Project, Primavera P6, or equivalent)
- Reliable and persistent approach, consistently following through on assignments
- Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, stooping, and sitting for extended periods
- Dedication to safety; willingness to work with hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics
- Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
- Compliance with U.S. export control laws required
